Great Managers Are Always Nice by Chip Averwater

A Note from Mike

To: My Fellow Travelers on this Management Adventure

I’ve enjoyed our visit.  We have many things in common.

If I had one wish for you, it would be that you spend your career in management.  There’s so much satisfaction in building a team, teaching skills, creating confidence, fostering respect, and forming productive lives that… well, I can’t imagine why anyone would want to do anything else.

I think we agree that, in the end, lasting value isn’t how many widgets we create, how high we climb on the corporate ladder, or how much money we make.  It’s how we influence the lives we touch.  Long after the widgets are worn out, we’ve retired from our work, and our money is spent, our influence remains.  Who can say how far it reaches and how many lives it touches?

And, if any we’ve managed choose to become managers too, well… I hope it’s because they saw in us the joy we got working with them.

If you ever want to talk, have a suggestion, or can correct me in one of my errors, I’d love to hear from you. Please email me at Mike.Mitchell(at)nicemanagers.com.  (Will you be surprised if I answer you?)

I wish you always the best of teams and a long happy career.

 Mike
